Whale Watching

The Sapphire Coast offers visitors some of the best whale watching opportunities in Australia. Whether you join a whale-watching cruise or perch yourself atop one of the dozens of headlines that dot our coastline, you’re bound to spot these gentle giants as they pass each year as they head north (May – July) and their southern migration, usually with young calves in tow (August – November).

Merimbula Main Beach

With five kilometres of pristine, white beach and crystal clear water, it’s no wonder Merimbula Main Beach is a haven for surfers seeking uncrowded waves. Main Beach backs onto a bush brimming with native animals. The beach is patrolled in Summer. There is an off-leash area for dogs. If you’re feeling energetic, the beach extends all the way to Pambula (5 kilometres).

Merimbula Boardwalk

Merimbula Boardwalk is a 3 kilometre round trip along the northern edge of Merimbula Lake. This level boardwalk meanders under the shade of tall eucalypt trees around the shore and mangrove forests of Merimbula Lake. Look out for the resident seal who patrols the oyster farms for a fishy snack. There are plenty of seats along the way plus a kiosk where you can stop for a snack.
